Readers will be aware that the Zip Storm nose cone is seen to be a dangerous shape and has caused several incidents whereby young karters, including members of our Club, have been injured.
The MSA have refused to outlaw this piece of plastic, and Zip have remained silent!
Scrutineers have been asked to look for damaged or deformed nose cones and exclude them from racing. This is OK as far as it goes but the cone is still wedge shaped and has caused 'shoveling' where the rear of a kart in front is lifted with the consequent loss of traction, steering etc.
The most dangerous incidents are caused when a 'Zip' kart spins and following karts ride up the front cone and are 'flipped'. This is not only dangerous to the 'flipped' driver but also to the driver of the 'Zip' who has, in some cases, been struck by the 'flipped' kart.
Many concerned drivers and parents have tried to have some thing done but, as I have said the MSA and Zip seem to be procrastinating, and no announcements have appeared for 2010.
In order that feelings can be expressed more openly a petition has been started. (Correspondance on the UK Karting Notice Board) Anyone who feels that the nose cone should be banned can add their name to the petition and also make a comment, if they wish.
